We had a BDAY party!!!

We had Killian's 3rd Bday party yesterday!! :) We had it at the lake house, and Killian ran straight into the snow blower handle when we got there. So this first picture is him crying from him head :( But after some ibuprofen, he felt better.
 See? ALL  better :)
Killian wanted a Thomas theme party. So I ran around and found him a Thomas pinata.
I also got him Thomas balloons and made him a thomas banner.
And a thomas cake and cupcakes. (can you tell it's a number 3?)
 Bday presents!!
SOOO excited to be 3 :)
He had a train whistle that he blew to tell people it was time for presents :)
He was VERY excited for his fishing rod from gpa.

And a vacuum from Aunt Suzy and Uncle Ken. I wish it would actually pick up dirt!
He had to hide his eye for Aunt Mary's gift... a soccer ball net.
 Eating lunch after presents.
A birthday boy and his cake
Blowing out the candles. He only got 2 :)
Eating the cake off his bday plate my mom and I painted for my bday :)
 Candy coming out of Pinata
Fishing with Gpa. He caught 5 fish!!!

 Fishing with my cousin.
Holding his fish. He loved it.

His bday party was lots of fun! He fell asleep at 430 on our way home, and stayed up until 11!! Sassy!!!!

Pirate vs. Alligator... and other dress up experiences

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted... I kept meaning to, but this month has been BUSY!

But, I have a good post for today: Anyone need a laugh this Friday? Well I've got one....

So remember that dress up box I put together for Killian this past Christmas?? Well it's become the play thing of choice. I have a very funny story which features a pirate (PS, usually he has his FULL outfit on, but this is the only photo I have of him as a pirate!!! you'd better believe that I'm whipping my camera out this weekend when he's dressed up) and an alligator:
Yes, the alligator is a piggy bank.
Alright, here's the story:
I bought the alligator at Once Upon a child with Killian, and he held it on the car ride home:
Killian: Mama, does this alligator eat my money?
Me: Yes, kind of. The money goes into his mouth and lands in his belly.
Killian: Hm... Well he nice in the car.

-__ (get home) Killian gets out of the car.
Killian: Aight. Now this alligator NAUGHTY. Let's take him up to my room.
(carries alligator to his room)
(Spends 10 min. getting on his pirate costume, then stands and looks at alligator. Quietly takes down his piggy bank and takes out all his money and spends another 10 min. putting all the money into the alligator. Stands back and looks at alligator. Gets sword)
Killian: You NAUGHTY ALLIGATOR! You steala my money! I'ma fight you!
(fights alligator with sword for a few min. Stands back and looks at alligator. Puts sword down, tries to dump money out of alligator).
Killian: Mama, I can't get my money out.

Haha.... Oh this child cracks me up. He's SO into imaginative play. My dress-up clothes are coming in handy every day :) Here are a few more photos of him dressing up:

Eating local in WI: Part 1-- SPRING

Alright... eating local and organic is a passion of mine. So I thought that I'd do a few posts about it, one for each season of WI. This post will be about eating local in spring, as well as the reasons why I eat local/organic:

Reasons why:
1. It's eco-friendly. Did you know that for every calorie of food that you eat, it took 67 calories of fuel to get it to you????? So that means that a strawberry, which is 40 calories, took up over 250 calories of fuel just to get into your mouth. Can you say ridiculous??
2. It keeps money local. This helps the local economy of your city/town. Don't you want to help out those local farmers, who will in turn spend money at local stores, who will in turn pay more taxes for your school district, who in turn will... see where this goes?
3. It's more nutritious. Food that's JUST been picked has more nutrients that food that was picked before it was fully ripe. Food from California can't be picked when it's ripe, or it'll rot by the time you purchase it at the store.
4. That brings me to my fourth reason: it's TASTIER!!! Hello...have you ever had a strawberry in December... and have you had a local strawberry in June? BIG difference!

As for organic: Almost all of the same reasons... eco-friendly, healthier (did you know organic foods have WAY more antioxidants?), etc.

So... how can you eat local in spring in WI?? Well some of it is preparation (which takes place in summer/fall), but you can start eating local in WI.
What's in season?
1. Asparagus
2. Spinach/lettuce/greens
3. pea sprouts/sunflower sprouts
4. rhubarb
5. Jams, maple syrup
6. Local, grass-raised meats

With the meats, the greens, rhubarb and jam, there are alot of meals that you can make that have at least one local ingredient in them. Of course, I've saved other things from the rest of the year to help me make my meals more complete, but if you want to start eating local right now, you can start saving up now. For example, I make spinach pesto and freeze it for the rest of the year NOW. I can't make spinach pesto any other time (well except maybe fall when some farmers plant a second crop of spinach). I freeze some asparagus and rhubarb for the rest of the year, and I make rhubarb jam for the rest of the year. All of this has to be done in spring when the produce is local, but I have it all ready for me at hand in August as well as February.

Bookcase and Toyshelf... a new paint job

So I have a LONG long list of big projects that I've wanted to get done around here... and I finally started on it this past weekend when Killian was at his dads. First to be done? Re-painting Killians bookcase and toy shelf. I bought these off of craigslist over a year ago. Here's how they looked for the past year:

So as you can see, they were meant to be in a girl's room. And while I'm not against having "girly" things in my son's room (please note he has a pink cozy coupe and a doll house), I do like my rooms to be all matching. So I decided to repaint these two pieces of furniture into green dinosaur pieces.
After a LOT of sanding, spray painting, taping, painting, and painting, here are the finished products:

I think they match his room pretty well. They aren't painted the best.. but hey. I'll probably end up changing the theme of his room in a year or so anyways. :)

Memorial Day-A Killian & Momma day

Wow, can you tell that school is tapering off for me? I'm getting plenty of posting done :)
So.. after I did all my projects this past weekend, I spend memorial day doing NOTHING but enjoying my son :)
First we went to a memorial day parade. Killian so enjoyed all the marching bands. He told me that he ws going to both play the drums in a marching band and play hockey when he gets big. PHEW he'll be a busy teenager. :)
Waiting on mama's lap for the parade to start...
Clapping for the veterans

After the parade, we got the dogs and headed to the lake. We spent at least 4 hours in the sun/water... I got sun burned, but Killian was fine. (for some reason I load him up with california baby sun screen but forget to put any on myself?)

We had ALOT of fun.... until we got home and I had a POUNDING migraine for 5 hours before I could fall asleep (or I should say until I could get Killian to fall asleep). I can't wait for this summer to begin... we'll be up at the lake alot more now that all I need to bring along for Killian is his blanket and swimsuit :) I love having a potty trained child.

Freezer Paper T-shirts

Alright, I came across this freezer paper tshirt idea on iammommahearmeroar.blogspot.com (a blog I LOVE), and I decided to try it. It is very easy, though I found that with some shirts, the fabric absorbs more, and the more layers of paint you put on, the worse the stencil gets. But... it's still a great/easy way to make individual t-shirts. I'm not going to repeat the process... I'll just link the process that iammommahearmeroar did.. because she made a great video.

Here are some examples of my first work... I wish I'd planned the pirate shirt better... I'd like to have done an anchor on the pocket, but I hadn't planned it well so the "Ahoy matey" was an after thought:
